Teaching students to summarise what they read plays an effective role in not only improving students’ written summaries of text, but also improving their comprehension of texts (Duke & Pearson, 2002). Notably, the rule-governed approaches and holistic are considered as effective approaches to the teaching of summarisation (Duke & Pearson, 2002). However, many students require instruction and practice in summarising before they are able to produce good oral and written summaries of texts. When students try to create summaries of text, they are not only trying to extract the important information from text, but also are learning to restructure text in their own language. Besides, students learn to summarise through teacher modelling, group practice, and individual practice.
There are some interesting worksheets and test for teaching summarising strategies in upper primary school classes.
