Importantly, children need critical literacy not only to be able to analyse and understand the power of the text, but to determine where the language is positioning them as readers (Winch et al, 2010). In other words, "children's books are in a unique position to develop knowing readers" (p. 534), and teacher should build on what children already know about multiliteracies when they come to school to extend and develop their knowledge and skills (Winch et al, 2010).
